Smile for London:
20 poets, 20 animators created 20 typographic films, screened to 1.4 million people on the London Underground platform screens.
Approach
Smile for London was a project that produced a set of intriguing short films shown on London Underground platform screens. The shorts featured poetry set to animation, with the aim of raising a smile from commuters.
Taking a poem by Benjamin Zephaniah entitled ‘Who’s Who’; illustrating the words using type made from modelling balloons to echo the themes of childhood within the poem. The final film was voiced by the poet himself.
Who’s Who
A poem by Benjamin Zephaniah
I used to think nurses
Were women,
I used to think police
Were men,
I used to think poets
Were boring,
Until I became one of them.
